Something different.

This post is a little different than most...let me know what you think?

A visit to my deep, dark abyss.  Things I cannot live without.  Or can I?

Hmmm...  I wonder...  Can I or can't I?

My must-haves.  My absolute necessities.  Starbucks.  Cardio.  Blackberry.  My routine, my system.

Oh, I forgot one.  Lipgloss.  Did I forget anything?  Ummm, I'm not sure...?!

Last week.

I am currently trying to quit my costly Starbucks habit.  Gosh, the amount of money I could save!  Oh yeah.  This deserves a "fist-pump" in the air.  So, I endured 3 days without Starbucks.  It sucked.  I definitely craved it.  Definitely.  I went without cardio for 4 days.  A combination of being sore and unavailable equipment (a topic for another post).  So, inability to work out...I think?  I don't think my Blackberry needs any explanation.  Ohhh, my routine, ummm -- that's for another post.  Lipgloss doesn't need an explanation either - I am a girl and it IS a girlie item...so there.

Is it an addiction or is an obsession...?  Starbucks:  addiction.  Cardio:  obsession.  BlackBerry:  addiction, no obsession (I am unsure about this one).  Routine is a definite obsession.  Also, I am not to sure "who" is aware of this one...I think Bern knows but, we don't discuss it...  Another time, another place, and another blog.

I can live without "certain" things but, I choose not to.  But, can I give them up?

Hmmm, Starbucks...

I started over yesterday and I will be starting over "again" tomorrow.  I'll keep you posted.

My weekend.

It was a good weekend.

Friday: date night with Bern.  Saturday:  a little of this and a little of that.  Sunday:  cinnamon rolls and kids.

Friday.  Day 3 of "no" Starbucks.  Rough.  We went to Juan's.  My absolute favorite Mexican restaurant of all-time.  Family owned and operated, Bern and I have "season tickets".  Then we watched the movie Valentine's Day.  Correction, I watched the movie.  Bern fell asleep.  It was your a-typical "vanilla" or "vanilla shell" girlie movie (thanks Mel and Bern).  I liked it.  It had a star-studded cast and most importantly it made me laugh-out-loud.  Those kinds of movies are the best!  I gave it a B rating in my book.

Saturday.  Ran errands in the morning.  Stopped by Starbucks.  I could not resist.  I just couldn't.  Back to Bern's house for pool-time.  On my way home I swung by the airport to drop off Bern; he is "North to Alaska" for a little R&R will his good friend, Bill.  Well, I headed home for pizza, wine, and Leap Year.  The movie was cute.  I guess you could say I liked it - it did not hold my attention.  I like Amy Adams, however, I didn't care for Matthew Goode's accent (and yes, I do realize he is British to begin with).  He didn't do the Irish accent well and the personality of his character was "off" at times.  But any-who, I penciled in a C in my book.

Sunday.  I finally had my cinnamon rolls, yummm!  My original plans for breakfast did not pan out.  Nothing was on tv Sunday morning.  I ended doing trip research for almost 4 hours.  Trip research overload.  I needed a break, a real honest to goodness break.  So my break consisted of guess what?  Yes, you guessed correctly:  I went to Starbucks.  I was the photographer at Ms. Ali's wonderful birthday party and she really enjoyed her first birthday cake (I took the pics to prove it)!  So cute.  Afterwards, I stopped by to see another girlfriend and her family.  It was great to catch-up.  Leighton and Zane got really big; it has been quite a while since I have seen them.  I finally gave Mr. Zane (he's 2) his belated birthday gift (from July 3, I missed the party).  Better late than never.  It was a great day!  I really enjoyed seeing my friends and their kids.  All of the kids were so cute!  I rounded out my fun-filled day with an exfoliating  mask and a few pages from Chasing Harry Winston.

Whew...all around it was a great weekend.  Relaxing, fun, and rewarding.

Time for my DVR:  The Closer and Rizzoli & Isles...  Until tomorrow then.

Let the countdown begin...

...80 days to go...

I am so excited for my upcoming trip. A long overdue vacation; the last "real" one was 4-1/2 years ago - on a Costa Cruise in the Caribbean. I know some of you are reading this and thinking "wait, how has Heather not been on vacation in the past 4-1/2 years?" Let me explain. Long weekends do not qualify as a vacation - my definition of a vacation requires that it be 5 days or longer. So, that means a quick trip to the beach or a flight back home doesn't count. You have to physically be "away" from work and home, and it is crucial that it does not include contact with your office.

The trip begins on Wednesday, November 17th. It will take Bern and I roughly 17 hours to reach our destination. We leave Phoenix in the a.m., head to Philadelphia for our connecting flight, and then fly across a HUGE body of water, the Atlantic, and finally arrive. In Rome that is!

Ok, visualize this:

I jump up and down, while doing double-handed fist pumps, and loudly sing "I AM SO E-X-C-I-T-E-D"!

Yes, I really do this. Bern can attest to this. This has become a rather frequent occurrence - the more research I do, the more excited I get! OH YEAH! I know that I am more excited than Bern right now, however, it will become more "real" for him when our departure package arrives from Costa Cruises in about 45 days. He will be on my bandwagon one day soon... Oh yeah!

We are going on a 7-day cruise of the eastern Mediterranean Sea and following the cruise we are spending 5-days in Rome. Each day of the cruise we will be in a different port: Palermo, Tunis (Africa), Palma de Mallorca (Spain), Barcelona, Marseille, Savona, and Rome. It will be one "busy" cruise. We definitely will not be bored. And five whirlwind days in Rome...walking all-about... SO EXCITED! OH YEAH!

It was quite the process for us to finally discuss, plan, and book this trip. It has been a trip 5-years in the making. Delayed twice before for different reasons, however, NOW it is finally booked! Yes. After much and I mean "much" debate, Bern and I, finally agreed on a cruise itinerary. Or should I say negotiations...? Hmmm, I will explain in another blog post. We had some "restrictions" in regards to the dates of the trip due to my work schedule; I have to be at work from the 1st-5th of every month for billing. So, we had to work the dates around billing. We almost thought we had the cruise set and ready to book -- until, we realized we forgot about Bern's high school reunion in October. So, back to the drawing board we went. Well, we finally decided on November. Bern came up with "over" Thanksgiving. It would give me, well "us", an additional two vacation days.

"I AM SO E-X-C-I-T-E-D"! Oh yeah!

Well, it is time for me to head to bed, work in the morning. Until tomorrow evening ...this and that...

A vacation planning checklist, I think…?

Where, when, who, how much…? Obviously, not necessarily in this order…

In my mind, there are important steps to vacation planning and/or traveling. A good set of luggage (preferable a set of red Tumi monogrammed luggage, like mine). Travel-size bathroom products/containers (I have plenty of these). A passport. Good packing skills. The ability to leave on a moments notice, for those fun, last minute getaways.

You always need to be prepared. In my case, I might be just a tad bit obsessive in this area. You never know when a weekend out-of-town might “pop-up”.

If your trip is not solo then make sure you choose a good traveling companion, in my case Bernie, my boyfriend, or Mel, my sister. Yes, I said “Mel”, she knows me in and out, not as well as Bern, but, she is a close second. Be wise in this decision as your companion can “make” or “break” the trip. Discuss your budget and obviously this is dependent on the location and length of the trip. Pick a mutually fun or interesting place to go. Location, location, location. Compromise is key. Request time-off from work, in advance (if possible) and pray the time fits into your schedule as in my case.

My upcoming trip is set. I will be traveling to Europe on a 7-day cruise in the Mediterranean and 5 days in Rome; plus 2-days for traveling to and from. My traveling companion of course is Bern. The time off of work is approved and my two additional two days as well; we wanted to receive the Pope’s blessing on Sunday (before we leave). Our budget is on target. And we compromised, a lot.

Let the countdown begin - 81 days to go!  Now on to research for the trip…

Spice: a little or a lot?

A little.

I wasn't durastic, however, I thought about it.  Results:  awesome.  A grand improvement from this morning.  Thank you Danielle!  She did a fabulous job.  I decided to keep it simple.  Added highlights and "some" low-lights.  A great trim; added more layers for "shaping".  It has been a very, very, long time since my hair has been this straight.  I love it!  Pretty nice, huh?  Well, at least to those who "see" me regularly most likely can see the difference.  Now, if only Danielle could straighten my hair daily...  And if I decide "curly" it will look great with the layers; the curls will now lay nicer.  A before and after picture would have been ideal.  Next time.  If you are local, in Arizona, Danielle, is a great hairstylist and I highly recommend her.

I'll be back at Danielle's (The Getaway) on November 3rd.  Trim and color touch-up before the big trip.  Let me know if you need her contact information.

I hope tomorrow I can replicate it...  Wish me luck.

Of course I cannot forget my brushes and eyelash curler!  And yes, I know the picture is sideways - I do not have the energy to correct it.

Also, two must haves for everyone:  Deep Clean oil-free makeup remover cleansing wipes (for my gym bag) and MAC Wipes (for nighttime).

Ok, there you have it my faves.  Obviously, all of the products are not used at once.  In regards to skincare products Caniglia MD Skincare is my main choice, currently, I am using the Phytomer line to give my skin a change.  Also, the Phytomer line is my facial products as well.

Have you ever noticed when you tried a new product that skin might react well or different...?  Well, its because your ph levels need to adjust.  So, in the future keep in mind that you need to give it 30 days for your skin's ph to adjust and before you decide it isn't working.  In addition, any age-defying products need to be used for 30 days continuously to see a difference and used twice a day, am and pm.

Absolute must do's:

  1. Every night remove your eye makeup; MK Oil-Free Eyemakeup Remover (the absolute best for this)

  2. Wash your face every night before bed

  3. Toner; important aspect of the skincare regime

  4. Eye cream.  MK Firming Eye Cream or Ultra Rich Eye Therapy are the 2 best products I have used ever.  An absolute must!  NOTE:  wear sunglasses when in the sun and make sure they are big enough to cover your eyes, hence, why "I" wear shades always -- there is a reason people!

  5. Use a scrub once per week

  6. Give yourself a facial monthly (at home and use the Phytomer line -- its used at spas, hence, how I found out about it)

  7. Microderm at least 2 times a month with MK Microdermabrasion (safe and effective at home)

  8. Use generously am and pm MK Indulge Soothing Eye Gel; the best to reduce puffiness and then some.

  9. Use concealer before foundation --- I don't think needs an explanation.  A must do.

  10. Have a problem with your eye shadow creasing?  The solution:  MK Eye Primer.  Guaranteed no eye shadow crease, period.

  11. MAC Painterly Paint Pot before eye shadow application; it holds the pigment all day and "reduces" eye shadow crease (does not eliminate it altogether).

  12. A decent set of brushes are a must.  I prefer MAC.

  13. MAC Brush Cleaner a must.

  14. Black mascara a must.  I prefer:  DiorShow or MK Ultimate Mascara (black).

  15. C-Firm Serum a must for age-defying: Mary Kay or Caniglia -- I like them both (equally).

  16. Raspberry Enzymes weekly: a quick 5 minute mask that "assists" in the age-defying process.  A must.  The results are amazing.

  17. Hairspray a must...my choice Redken because it holds and is light at the same time.

  18. Mousse:  tousle me softly fits the bill right now.  Just enough hold for my "curls".
A little of ...this and that... regarding my favorites.  Any questions...?

What are some of your "faves"...?

Yesterday and today.

It was a positive day all-round.  I caved and had Starbucks today; I am trying to quit.  Clearly stated:  I am Addicted.  It is not going very well.  Cardio today only lasted 20 minutes but I HAD to do it.  Yes, I know, I am addicted to cardio as well.

Yesterday morning I had a delightful breakfast date with my newly engaged cousin, Amy.  It was exciting to see her "excitement" -- definitely makes me feel old; well older.  I was happy to see her happy.  She deserves it.  I am the oldest out of all of the cousins (on both sides).  A cute little tidbit:  Amy was my birthday present when I turned 6; or so I thought.  I still think it is cool that we share our birthday together.  And yes, every year we do tell each other Happy Birthday -- it is kind of funny when we do it.  Any who, after a great breakfast at the Daily Dose in Old Town Scottsdale I headed to the mall for my dreadful search of "new" work clothes.  Mind you, I hate, hate, hate, shopping.  I truly dislike it -- not sure why, but, I do.

Surpisingly, my shopping experience went very well.  And then some!  I gave Kirsten and Mom the low-down on the phone yesterday.  I would call it an "extravaganza" because it renewed my zest for shopping.  Wow, did I just really write that?  Um, yes I did.  Ok then.  I did truly enjoy it and it was fun.  I will spare you with all my details.  However, I will say this I loved just about everything I tried on -- with a few exceptions of course.  You know, how, when an item looks great on the display but, when you get it on in the dressing room you are like "yuck" or "this does not work at all" it ruins the "great" affect and/or your vision of how it was "meant" to look on your body.  Overall, I liked it my experience yesterday, period.  I am looking forward to my next trip...  Oh yeah!  This is dangerous, very.

After my shopping extravaganza yesterday, I returned to the mall this evening to exchange my shoes (for non-damaged ones).  My sexy, red, peep-toes.  Yes.  The shoes are absolutely delicious!  And they are for work...and can be worn "while" not at work.  Versatility in shoes is the key.  It is funny that I bought them because they are 4" heels and I decided I was taking a break from high heels hence, why I purchased two pairs of flats two weeks ago...  Hmmm, I can't not be girle and high heels make me feel girlie.  Sexy and girlie.  And to think I do not like to go shopping but, I liked it yesterday.

I decided that turning 34 will be a turning point for me.  For my wardrobe and my hair that is.

The wardrobe is a work in progress.  It involves money, a lot of money.  Replenshing your wardrobe can be quite costly.  So, baby steps.  White House | Black Market is my new "IT" store.  I have my very own personal assistant/shopper at the store, Sabrina.  I love her!  Oh, and I am a Black Book member - whatever that means.  But, it did give me 5% off my first purchase so, I am down with that.  I can't wait to go back and select additional items to purchase from my "wish list"...  Sounds like fun doesn't it?  And, I get to do this with Sabrina my personal assistant -- so awesome!

As for my hair...I am not sure what to do different.  My appointment is this Wednesday.  I booked enough time for cut and color (highlight).  The last time I went to the hair salon was 1-1/2 weeks before Mel got married -- back in March.  Yes, I know its August  now.  I definitely need a trim.  My color is so-so, I could wait it out longer if I wanted.  However, I might "wack" it off...  I might be durastic and change the color again....  I am not sure what to do?  But, I do know I need something different and I want to spice it up.  A LOT!  I have a problem though...over the last 6 months my hair has gotten so curly, well more than before.  The funny part is the top/crown area is normally bone straight now has some wave to it.  Shocking I know.  I like it straight as well however, I weat it curly always...quicker and easier.  But, remember I want to add "SPICE"!  Well, that means I need to shake-it-up...  Maybe low-lights and highlights with my trim or...

Oh, I forgot to mention skincare.  Age-defying skincare.  Hmmm, nope I don't need to mention it or discuss it - just know I use it.  Maybe skincare will be a posting for another day and the entry will be completely devoted to it.  Sounds like a good idea - be looking for it ladies.  A posting completely devoted to my favorites - the skincare products that I cannot live without.

I'll keep you posted.  Obviously.  Oh, and I will be wearing the peep-toes tomorrow or Wednesday - I can't decide yet...

Thursday, August 19, 2010

Today was a good day.

Today is almost over.  Shortly, I will be all snug in bed.  Hopefully reading a chapter in Three Fates (by Nora Roberts).  Reading is one of my favorite things to do...  I feel like I accomplished a lot today.  I don't physically see an accomplishment.  Not at work.  Not at home (or personally).  However, I "feel" as though I did.  I feel a sense of accomplishment.  The "ah-ha" for a job well-done.  I think its because I marked a few items complete on my various to-do list(s)...

Shortly, I will go through my evening ritual.  I already completed the "coming home from work" ritual.  I am talking about my "girlie" ritual of getting ready for bed.  Floss.  Brush my teeth.  Gargle, rinse, spit.  Remove my eye makeup.  Wash my face.  Apply toner.  Apply my age-defying face serum, eye cream, face cream.  Carmex.  Body lotion.  Cuticle Cream.  Hand cream.  Sometimes I don't wash my face...ugh, so bad for the skin...and that means I "skip" the skincare routine (the age-defying steps)...

Oh, most importantly I did make various individuals I encountered laugh, smile, and feel good about themselves.  It always makes me feel good when I can "add" something to someone's day.  If I can brighten it just a little -- kudos to me!

Another tidbit about the day - I helped Bern start his blog.  The blog is not "viewer" friendly as of yet...but, it will be.  We will be working on "COME FLY WITH ME!!" tomorrow evening...  His blog will be about his travels, business, economy, and sports - just to name a few...

Time for my evening ritual.  And most importantly-- time to read.  Time for me!

Nite.

Absolutely. Positively. Completely.

Random.

Tonight's plan.
Cardio, check.  Dinner, check.  Blog (in progress).  Facial.  Read.

Tonight.
Books.  Italy.  Positano.  Venice.  Crunchy.  Research.  Lists.  Wine.  Work.  Buried.  Moments.  Facebook.  Bern.  Gramps.  Airplane.  Alaska.  Smores.  Dishwasher.  Smile.  Clothes.  Laugh.  Starbucks.  Movies.  Date.  Weekend.  Travel.  Sisters.  Silly. Weddings.  Shoes.  Family.  Coffee.  Water.  Vacation.

Random thoughts, I know.  Ideas for blog posts.

I had some inspiration today.  My morning drive to the office.  My visit to the post office.  Facebook.  The ever-famous status updates.  Erykah's status.  Smores.  I pause.  I think, hmmm, boy does that sound good.  Yummy.  Gooey marshmallow.  Melted Hershey's chocolate.  Crunchy graham cracker.  Mouth-watering.  I know.  I thought about smores for quite some time today.

I need to clarify something out loud, my OBSESSION, my COMPULSION.  Two spaces after each period.  Period.  This is how it is done AND how it should be.  Period.  Mrs. Byrd ingrained this in my brain.  Two spaces.  Two spaces.  Inhale.  Hold.  Exhale.  Repeat.  Ok, good-to-go.  How can I explain this so you will understand...?  Compare to...nails on a chalkboard.  Seriously?  Yes, seriously.  Yeah I know, it's only two spaces.  Two spaces, always and forever, period.  Another random addition to my post; its funny how these appear every post...

Smores.  How do you like it?  Lightly toasted.  Cremated.  Warm and mushy.  Chocolate?  How many pieces?  One. Two. Three.  How do you cook it?  Campfire.  Microwave (me).  Fireplace.  Fire pit.  Your utensil?  Stick.  Metal skewer.  Plate (me).

Is your mouth watering yet?  Mine is.

Smores is really s'more.  The word is a contraction.  "Some-more".  It is unclear exactly when or whom concocted the recipe.  Late 1800's early 1900's?  It appears that in 1927 the Girl Scouts may have had a "hand" in the creation/invention of s'mores due to spreading the word about the delicious dessert.  I cannot pinpoint an exact date or person.  Ok, when were marshmallow's invented?  In the early 1800's by confectioners, and in 1948, the first "official" marshmallow manufacturer came about.  Basically, I can only pinpoint that s'mores was passed on by word-of-mouth.

By the way, we just missed National S'mores Day, August 10th.  Yes, can you believe that?  A holiday for 'mores.  Now, next year you have good reason to eat a s'more or two because you are celebrating (a holiday)!  Also, no calorie counting allowed on this holiday.

Ok, time for me to make AND eat a s'more, my way.  Neat.  Unique.  Warm and mushy.  One marshmallow.  Three pieces of Hershey's chocolate (room temperature).  Two graham crackers.  Plate.  Microwave, 20-25 seconds.  I watch the marshmallow rise. When it hits the "right" size I open the door. "Smash" it together, immediately.  I squish the marshmallow to the ends of the graham cracker.  I devour it.  Absolute utter bliss.

My unique way of making a s'more.  How about you?

A test for mobile Blogger

This post is to ensure my mobile blog feature is working for ...this and that... during lunch-time.  Yes, you read that correctly.  I might just happen to blog during my lunch hour...about this and that.  Until lunch time then.

Where does the time go?

I cannot believe the time is 10:23 p.m.! I still have not eaten dinner. Ugh, I have not completed my entire to-do list for the evening. Why, am I not surprised…?

I left my office late as usual, 6:10 p.m. Bernie can attest to the “usual” part; I very rarely leave on-time. I cautiously head up the ramp and exit the parking garage; if you don’t use caution you are liable to get “smacked” by a car zooming through the parking lot.

Thankfully, I was able to avoid the drive-up line at the bank; no deposit today. Well, truthfully, there was a deposit but I didn’t have it prepared prior to the 6:00 p.m. close. So, no deposit today and I head towards the dry cleaners. Sometimes, the dry cleaner is a trip I make during lunchtime because I can’t get there otherwise. I keep reminding myself all the way home “don’t forget to stop at the post office” because I need to drop off today’s mail. It is always fun when I forget and have to turn around when I get home and head back to the post office – quite a nuisance. Typically happens when I am on the phone; imagine that.

I have a certain route based on “what” stops I need to make on the way home. Funny, but I think everyone has a unique route for running errands. I want to ensure the quickest route home for my to-do time.

Ok, so I pick up my dry cleaning, drop off the mail and arrive at my humble abode. I love my little apartment! I park by the mailboxes; another usual part of my day. Get my mail; review it as I head to my apartment (to save time). Keys in the door, turn, unlock, and the door opens. Flip the light switch. I have arrived, home sweet home. Drop my bag on the ottoman. Put my lunch bag next to the sink. I grab my protein powder and shaker cup; measure out my scoop, add water and shake…and presto! Ok, time to drink up and change and head to the gym! Oh yeah, this is definitely the best part of my day.

The gym is an absolute must no matter what. I can honestly say I think I am addicted. Seriously, addicted – I could compare it to Starbucks. Hmmm, I am not quite sure if comparing my addiction to Starbucks to the gym…? By the way, the Starbucks addiction has decreased significantly (really it has). The gym and Starbucks are equal addictions; I think…

Ok, my usual walk to the gym (in my complex) with my water bottle and Ipod in hand. I am officially ready to sweat! So, my favorite machine the elliptical machine is occupied so…that means I am on the treadmill. However, I get a treadmill with a working headset so I watch AND listen to Bones as I sweat. My usual time is roughly about 35 minutes; 45 minutes if I really want it. Ok, enough of my obsession with the gym and/or cardio.

As I head back home I realize the time is 7:40 p.m. Time, where does it go?! I prepare a quick salad and set out my leftover Mexican dinner from Sunday…yummm! I am determined to start and complete my online bill pay enrollment today. An absolute must, period, no exceptions. It is quite the experience to change from one bank to another. Extremely time consuming. All in all, I spent roughly 3 hours setting up my bill pay. 3 hours are you SERIOUS? I cannot believe it took this long! Ughhh, ok, there goes my evening. I wanted to watch my shows: The Closer and Rizzoli & Isles. My shows are set to record on the DVR, so, I keep on working away with bill pay. Needless, to say I have one payee left to enter and will do this tomorrow morning. I want to write today’s blog entry, work on a few other blog entries, watch my shows, read a chapter of Three Fates, and…I can’t remember. Wow, it has been a long day. Oh, I didn’t get to talk to my girlfriend, Kirsten but we managed a few text messages however, we really need to talk live on the phone (and catch up). I managed to squeeze in a few minutes of talking to Bern (a little air conditioning assistance was needed). I am glad Bern’s thermostat is in proper working order and no service call. Wow, what a tangent…

I still, have not officially eaten my Mexican leftovers. Wow, can you believe I have all these things still on my to-do list and it is 10:23 p.m. at this point?! Ok, I need to get real here. I could go on and on – where does the time go? It goes away and away, that is where the time goes. Ok, I did finally eat them somewhere around 10:50-11:10 p.m. – way to late to be eating dinner I know.

Well, I finished one thing on my evening to-do list. Bill pay set-up for my new account; check. Yes, I know I still have one payee to enter (in the am). Now, time to blog (obviously, or you wouldn’t be reading this). I did watch The Closer; courtesy of my DVR. Currently, listening to Rizzoli & Isles and will watch again tomorrow; courtesy of my DVR again. My DVR is definitely worth the extra $10 a month on my Cox bill.

Ok, well time to wash my face, brush my teeth and read a few pages of my book and catch some zzz’s… I already set out my coffee cup, made the coffee (and set the timer), and set out my oatmeal…yes, I am a little obsessed about how things are set-up for my morning routine. It is a must!

Time for bed.  I realize my post is a little different tonight however, that is what makes it unique. I hope you enjoyed a little of…this and that…about my day today.

Goodnight. Don’t let the bed bugs bite.

Movie Review: The Expendables

A+.  I absolutely loved The Expendables.  By far, if you are an action movie enthusiast (me) it is a definite "must-see".  Typical action movie plot.  I thought Stallone (Barney Ross) who both acted and directed did a great job; I am looking forward to his next flick...  The action sequences were extremely well choreographed.  The movie had a "smidge" of romance with Jason Statham (Lee Christmas).  I love his "oh-so-sexy" voice.  A hint with Stallone, but it never goes that far...

A few reviews of the movie stated Stallone was trying to restore his youth...not so in my viewing of the movie - I actually thought quite the opposite.  On several occasions, both Stallone and Rourke discussed with each other how they were "not" young anymore; Statham made several "jabs" at Stallone with regard to no longer being youth...basically, they poked some fun at themselves and it did make the crowd laugh.  Simply stated: the age factor was addressed throughout the movie and it was tastefully done (with humor at times).

I will be candid, I thought everyone looked great.  To my recollection there were only two shots with no shirts: Stallone and Rourke.  I have to say Stallone definitely worked out and prepared physically for this movie.  Rourke definitely does not have the body or the voice he had in Wild Orchid but, his physique fit the bill for the swagger of his character, Tool.  Dolph's character, Gunner, was extremely fit and he played a great loose cannon.

The best fight scene of the movie was between Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren; the size factor betweent the two of them was great.  A close second would be the fight scene in the tunnel before the explosion; this scene involved just about everyone...

Bernie listened to me go "on and on" with my typical movie review and rundown (yes, after each and every movie I always do this) and he asked "If they all didn't look good would you still like the movie as much?"  I told him "Hands down, absolutely yes!"

The cameo by Arnold, Trench, was short and sweet, funny, and made a point.  I won't blow it for those of you that are going to see it.  Bruce Willis, Mr. Church, was a small role and fit Bruce well however, and it did not resemble John McClane whatsoever...I was a bit disappointed can you tell?

A few action stars that should have been in the movie - were asked and declined for various reasons:  Wesley Snipes (Caesar), Jean-Claude Van Damme (Gunner), Kurt Russell and Steven Seagal.  I will not even begin to go through a few of so called reasons they declined...

I thought the movie soundtrack was great and will be a nice addition to my music collection and my Ipod.

To be honest I saw the movie because of Dolph Lundgren, Sylvestor Stallone, and Jason Statham...need I say more?  Dolph and Stallone definitely prepared for the movie.

All in all, if you have followed any of the characters acting careers and you enjoyed their films this movie is a must-see movie and it was well put together.  If you are not an action movie fan this is not a movie for you.  Check out the movie website:  http://www.expendablesthemovie.com/#/home.

The Expendables was one of the best action movies I have seen in about 10 years.  I am looking forward to going back to the old-school actors and their movies...  I will be starting with Rambo because I have never seen it.  Bern is absolutely shocked that I have neer seen John Rambo..Netflix here we come for a little of ...this and that...

...today and tomorrow...

Well, today was a long day.  I left work at 7:50 p.m..  I dialed China Wok from my Blackberry as I pulled out of the garage and ordered my "usual" combo meal of spicy Mongolian Beef.  I was very thankful they were still open -- it really made my night.  By the way, I think I made the owner's night as well because she was happy that I was happy and she remembered me too!  Too funny I know.

I sent out a one-time only "mass email" last night announcing my blog and I received a few responses today: Uncle Lee, Auntie Susan, Myrna, Tom, Mom, and Randy.  My Auntie Susan sent me some GREAT ideas and tips as she has had a blog of her own for several years.  Thank you Auntie Susan!  I would highly recommend my Aunt's blog: http://www.penguinhall.blogspot.com/.

It is pretty exciting to know that people are reading my blog.  I hope my ideas and writing bring joy and amusement to those that read it.  My blog is truly about "that and that" - hence, the name!  I hope to make daily entries for daily reading enjoyment.  Ideally, I would love to know each reader is enjoying their few minutes of "personal time" in the morning, afternoon, or evening reading my blog and enjoying their favorite drink of choice (i.e.:  Starbucks, tea, soda, wine).  I can typically be caught with Starbucks, bottle of water or glass of Pinot Noir!  Hmmm, good topic choice for next time -- Starbucks (and individual drink choices...).

Happy reading, relaxing and drinking....with "this and that"...

The things I miss…

Have you ever been stuck in traffic, in your car, and listening to “that” song and all of a sudden an old memory pops into your brain? The memory of course can be of someone, something, or somewhere. A number of different feelings can and do wash over you: joy, laughter, sadness, angry, or even just a smile (just to name a few). Periodically, this happens to me. However, for me it is typically of a person and a particular memory of that person. Well, there are people, places, things, and even feelings however, I won’t get that deep – I will share the actual concrete things at least in ‘this” blog entry.

To this day hearing the song “I wear my sunglasses at night” reminds me of my old friend, Pete; he used to wear his sunglasses at night. I am frequently reminded of Big Grandpa (my great grandpa). My sister, Melanie, and I will “pinky-swear on Big Grandpa” when something is really important and we want to ensure we are telling the truth. The key component is Big Grandpa used to make us pinky-swear with him, so, naturally of course we do it in his honor. Yes, at the ages of 28 and 34 we still do this…however, not recently – hmmm, maybe that means we are officially growing up and we trust that as adults we are telling the truth…? Too funny – I will have to run that one past Mel.

I think of people. I think of grandparents who have past away. My oldest and dearest friend, known since early childhood, Jason Sadowski, whom I have known since the age of 4 – we still speak today and frequently I might add; in addition, Jason and his wife, Brenda, are expecting their first baby! I am very excited and think they both will be wonderful parents. Oh, and all of the fun and mischief Jason and I got into when we were younger.

I think of Maxiemoose my dog; currently lives with “her” dad in Alaska. I think of the “fab” four from high school: Dena, Dana, Amy, and myself. Today, Amy is my best friend and we are both very important to one another’s lives. Over the years, I have reconnected separately with both, Dana and Dena as well. I miss my Uncle RJ and Aunt Virginia who live on the east coast, Martha’s Vineyard; I have a very special and unique relationship with them (different from my other aunts and uncles). I think of the “crew” from Alaska – I have reconnected with a handful of the crew on Facebook; don’t you just love the internet?!

I think of memories. The memories I miss the most are of being a child. I miss being silly and getting dirty…I was such a tomboy. I especially miss hanging out with Jason, my childhood friend, however, now I just call him when I need to talk or catch-up. I remember Melanie, my little sister, being little – Mel is all grown up now and married. Wow! Yes, little Mel is married. Ok, I have had several months to adjust so I need to just deal with it. I think the best part of Mel being Mrs. Korsten IS Mr. Korsten – I have a little brother (well, he is actually very tall)!!! Yes, awesome I know. Ok, what a “segue”…an idea for another blog…

I think of things. I miss the snow; at times I do miss the snow. I miss Alaska: the fresh, clean air, the wildlife, the beautiful terrain, the freedom (first time away from home at the age of 21). I think of time – where did it go? Life, it passes you by very quickly.

Even though I miss various people, memories, and things I still have the memories, the stories, the experiences, the pictures (visual and actual photos), the past, the thoughts…and the songs that remind me of the things I miss.

At times the things I miss make me wonder who and what really are important. Simply stated I need to remember: “Do not sweat the small stuff”. I need to remember that adding the occasional pinky-swear (with my sister) is necessary evil and advantageous to keep it real and young.

As Jiminy Cricket says “age” IS just a number…and I will live to be 103!

I hope you enjoyed a little of this and that, I did…until next time…
